Vendor Description

The following language was provided by 180Solutions: '180solutions' programs provide users with free access to premium games, humor and entertainment content, and downloadable applications, in exchange for connecting them with targeted advertising while browsing online.

It is important to note that all 180solutions applications are permission-based installations requiring the user to explicitly accept the 180solutions End User License Agreement. 180solutions software does not collect or track any personally identifiable information, nor does it transmit any information to third parties. Our software is visible in the user's desktop computing environment, clearly identifying itself with labeled ads and a system tray icon from which the user can access product information. If, for any reason, the user does not find our programs to be of value, we provide easy to understand instructions for complete uninstall.'

Category

Adware:  Software that displays pop-up/pop-under advertisements when the primary user interface is not visible, or which do not appear to be associated with the product.

Reasons For Retention

Displays popup/popunder ads that are displayed when main product is not running or do not appear to be connected with the product. 180Search Assistant presents ads when the main product is not in use.

Updates itself or any other item without user permission or knowledge at time of update. 180Search Assistant periodically updates using an auto-updater without a readily accessible means for users to configure or disable it. 180Search Assistant was observed contacting downloads.180solutions.com and config.180solutions.com to update dat files in C:/Program Files/180search Assistant.

On 07.13.05 a variety of software, including 180SearchAssistant, WebSearch Toolbar, InternetOptimizer and more was installed as bundle from trufkz.html (careful, do not click this link). The user was led into installing this software under the pretense that it was necessary for use of the site: ('Please install Media Tickets to support this website'). Subsequently, the user's browser settings are change and popup ads shown.
