ca ecoSoftware

First used within CA Technologies, CA ecoSoftware solution is now helping to improve sustainability at corporations throughout the world.

We created these products using some of our strongest existing technologies as a foundation. We then innovated to meet key needs in four areas:

  • Sustainability Management – to help define sustainability strategy and goals and then select and run a program that will deliver on those goals, including choosing the right initiatives and being able to report on them much more quickly and efficiently
  • Carbon Management (and Natural Resource Management) – to measure, calculate and report on energy use, water, waste and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the enterprise
  • Environmental Assessments – to measure the environmental performance of sites, facilities and suppliers, this technology provides a method and process for capturing information more easily via Web-based questionnaires
  • Operation Energy and Power Management – to measure, monitor, analyze, manage and control data center and facilities performance across an organization

CA ecoSoftware capabilities are delivered through two integrated parts:

CA ecoMeter helps visualize, monitor and report on energy use in data centers and across facilities. It captures detailed real-time data to measure performance, identify trends and issue alerts, as well as to help take action to better use capacity, enhance reliability and performance and make ongoing improvements.

CA ecoGovernance is sustainability management software that helps companies measure, manage and report their impacts associated with energy, carbon, water and waste. It helps them make more effective decisions, take action and pursue a systematic, governed approach to environmental initiatives.

Customer — Lockheed Martin, U.S.

Lockheed Martin is a global security company and information technology provider. Its new NexGen Cyber Innovation and Technology Center houses a state-of-the-art data center in the Washington, D.C. area, which is used to showcase technological innovation as well as to provide a range of IT services. The data center staff needs to be able to track power consumption historically and in real-time. They also need to monitor overall system health and issue automatic alerts in the event of power-related alarm conditions, in order to support unattended operation.

Lockheed Martin implemented CA ecoSoftware in its NexGen data center as one of its tools to monitor the energy consumed by a range of devices, including those responsible for IT, power supply and cooling. These include UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), PDU (Power Distribution Unit) and CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioner) systems. Dashboards provide both aggregated information and drill-down detail about current, voltage and energy consumption, PUE, power and phase load. Intelligent alerts are set up to notify staff in the event of adverse conditions.

Lockheed Martin has simplified energy management, helped improve staff efficiency, and transformed the approach to power in the NexGen data center. Added benefits include:

  • Real-time visualization of energy consumption and power demand
  • Greater insight into power across different PDUs (power distribution units), indicating areas where capacity exists before adding additional equipment
  • Providing a balance of power across all phases
  • More effective and accurate alerting in the event of power issues
  • Opportunity to show how Lockheed Martin and CA Technologies use innovation to enhance system reliability and promote efficiency
