Primerica Boosts Productivity and Readies a New Generation of IT Mainframe Staff with CA Chorus


ISLANDIA, N.Y., July 10, 2013 – CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA) today announced that Primerica, Inc., a leading distributor of financial products to middle income households in North America, is using CA Chorus™ to improve the performance of its database systems and enable newer IT workers to use database tools effectively.

“What we are engaged in now is further optimizing our performance and service delivery—and ensuring that new IT talent will continue to run these IT assets as effectively as present and past generations of IT staff have,” said David Wade, CIO, Primerica. “Testing and implementing facile toolsets such as CA Chorus assists us in this process."

With a network of thousands of independent insurance representatives throughout the United States and Canada selling an array of financial products, including term life insurance and investment and saving products, Primerica requires 24X7 processing with continuous availability and support for its zEnterprise technology. In every application, the company either accesses or delivers data to the mainframe.

In 2012 the company was looking to improve DB2 for z/OS availability and performance, because it would mean less DB2 downtime and faster transaction time. It also needed to find a way for newer IT workers to easily use and understand DB2 tools. Most newer workers are unfamiliar with the mainframe’s traditional “green screen” and accustomed to more user friendly, Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs).

As part of its retooling effort, Primerica decided to implement CA Chorus™ Database Management for DB2, with its user friendly, role-based workspace. "We needed to address the challenge of introducing a new generation of IT workers to the mainframe environment and CA Chorus delivered the GUI-oriented navigation and functionality for system monitoring and troubleshooting that we were looking for," said Wade.

“Companies such as Primerica want their IT workers to manage DB2 databases and other systems from a single integrated workspace," said Michael Madden, CA Technologies general manager, Mainframe. "With CA Chorus, instead of focusing on multiple applications, DB2 analysts are able to use a single, intuitive dashboard and turn their full attention to delivering superior service to their internal and external customers."

“After our proof of concept, we were convinced that the entire set of CA Chorus disciplines might enable us to extend the life of our current mainframe past the traditional three-year upgrade cycle. From both cost and performance standpoints, this is significant," said Wade.
