NCMEC and CA Technologies Tackle the Truth about Teens and Online Privacy

Webinar Hosted During National Cyber Security Awareness Month

NEW YORK and Alexandria, Va., October 16, 2014 – In time for the Department of Homeland Security’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and CA Technologies are joining forces to host a free webinar on October 22 at 4 p.m. EST, focused on teens and online privacy.

Teens are now sharing more information about themselves on social media than ever before. This free webinar will explore what privacy means to teens and offer ideas to help them better protect themselves online. The topics covered include identity theft, sexting and digital footprints.

“The way that this generation of teens looks at privacy and sharing information online can be seen every day in how they use smartphones and social media apps,” said John Ryan, NCMEC president and CEO.  “We want to make sure that safety and the real world impact of online choices are part of their thinking and we’re grateful to CA Technologies for helping us share these important messages.”

The webinar, sponsored by CA Technologies and hosted by NCMEC’s NetSmartz Workshop, will feature Larry Magid, a technology journalist and Internet Safety advocate. Magid, who serves as on-air technology analyst for CBS News, is co-director of, founder of and a NCMEC Board Member. He also wrote NCMEC’s first publication on online safety in 1994.

For more than a decade, CA Technologies has supported NCMEC and their mission to find missing kids and prevent child exploitation. In addition to monetary support, the company has contributed software solutions, services and training. CA Technologies funding currently helps support NetSmartz, a free educational resource developed by NCMEC to empower children and help them make safer choices both online and in the real world.

“We are proud to partner with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children on this important safety webinar for teens,” said Erica Christensen, vice president, Corporate Social Responsibility, CA Technologies. “Through this initiative, our goal is to help educate young people about the privacy risks we all face when sharing information online.”

This is the fourth in a series of webinars, which began in 2012, hosted by NetSmartz and sponsored by CA Technologies.
