CA Supports Innovation with over $1 Million Commitment to Canadian Universities

Donation will Fund Continuing Research in the Area of IT Management

TORONTO, June 21, 2007 – CA today announced it will invest more than $1 million over the next three years for collaborative research on information technology across several Canadian universities, paving the way for advances in IT management.

"CA is investing in research that will advance the information technology industry and enhance IT systems management products for the workplace," said Dr. Gabriel (Gabby) Silberman, senior vice president and director of CA Labs. "CA is always open to partnering in collaborative and multi-disciplinary approaches to innovation that allow a continued focus on new trends, opportunities, and issues surrounding this exciting aspect of technology."

Universities to receive funding from CA include the University of Toronto, the Université du Québec en Outaouais, the University of Waterloo, Queen's University in Kingston, and Carleton University in Ottawa.

The funds will be directed towards specific projects managed by working groups of PhD and MSc candidates, such as the group at the University of Toronto, working on a distributed content-based middleware platform to meet the requirements of workflow management and business processes, or the group at the Université du Québec en Outaouais, working on user-friendly tools that will help IT staff determine access control security policies for their enterprise systems.

"CA's commitment to innovation at Canadian universities will help advance the development of new technologies that are essential to Canada's success in an information-dependent world," says Hans-Arno Jacobsen, associate professor of engineering at the University of Toronto and head of the Middleware Systems Research Group. "CA's generous contribution allows us to provide students with access to advanced research opportunities that will help lead towards future business applications."

At Queen's University, students are working in the area of policy-based intelligent automation, which aims to unify and simplify enterprise information technology management by enabling computer systems to perform intuitively based on predetermined criteria.

"Working with CA has led Queen's University to build its existing research in the area of policy-based intelligent automation to ensure it meets today's industry standards," adds Pat Martin, professor in the School of Computing at Queen's University. "This has led to a richer experience for the students and has focused their research on issues that are relevant to the concerns of industry."

In addition to the funding announcement, CA is also expanding its role with the Consortium for Software Engineering Research (CSER), a Canadian non-profit organization that facilitates industry directed research programs involving industrial members, universities and researchers from the National Research Council of Canada. CA's Dr. Silberman was recently appointed to the organization's board of directors.
