Description

Win32.Reign.R is a trojan that attempts to steal sensitive information from an affected machine. Reign.R also uses stealth techniques to hide its presence from users.

Method of Infection

When executed, Reign.R creates the following directory:

%Windows%\tgbcde\

It copies itself to this directory as module32.exe and removes the original executable.

Reign.R also drops a DLL file to this directory as library32.dll.

Note: '%Windows%' is a variable location. The trojan determines the location of the current Windows folder by querying the operating system. The default installation location for the Windows directory for Windows 2000 and NT is C:\Winnt; for 95,98 and ME is C:\Windows; and for XP is C:\Windows.

Reign.R makes several modifications to the registry. It creates the following registry key and sets the value to the time when Reign initially loaded:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\tgbcde

It also sets the following registry run key so that module32.exe is executed each time Windows is started:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\tgbcde = "%Windows%\tgbcde\module32.exe arg1"

Reign also tries to register itself as a service process.

Note: The Reign.R DLL (library32.dll) hides any file or registry key containg the string 'tgbcde'; hence affected users will not be able to see files created by Reign using Windows folders or Explorer. Reign also hides its own process on the affected machine.

Payload

Keylogging/Stealing Sensitive Information

On Windows 9x/ME systems Reign tries to gather cached passwords using WNetEnumCachedPasswords API.

It also copies the user's mail settings to %Windows%\tgbcde\~tmp636; this information includes the user's e-mail address, mail server, username and password.

Reign logs usernames and passwords for both the online currency sites, 'egold' and 'evocash' to the following files:

%Windows%\tgbcde\egold.pst
%Windows%\tgbcde\evocash.pst

Additionally Reign logs the user's keystrokes to %Windows%\tgbcde\kbd.txt and records URLs visited by the user and Web requests made by the user to these files:

%Windows%\tgbcde\htm.txt
%Windows%\tgbcde\req.txt

Every 12 hours Reign uploads all of these files to an FTP server and then removes them from the user's system.
