1.0 Welcome

Welcome to the readme file for installing CA Harvest Version Control Interface r7.20.5 (VCI r7.20.5). VCI r7.20.5 provides new features for a closer integration with your existing CA Harvest r7.1 VCI client with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 or 2005. VCI r7.20.5 applies only to Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 or 2005; it does not apply to any other IDE that integrates with CA Harvest through VCI.

This readme file provides operating system support, system requirements, installation considerations, installation instructions, and related information for VCI r7.20.5 only. For similar information for CA Harvest r7.1 components, see the CA Harvest r7.1 readme.

2.0 New Features

VCI r7.20.5 includes the following new features, which you can access directly from Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 or 2005:

  • Item-level context-you can set context for individual items instead of all items in a package.

  • Multiple context settings in a single package-you can group several items with different item-level contexts in the same package.

  • Increased flexibility in creating packages-you can create packages by clicking the new Create Package button in the Package Explorer, the Set Context dialog, and the Global Plug-in toolbar.

Note: For more information about these new features and how to configure and use VCI, see the Version Control Interface User Guide.

    3.0 Operating System Requirements

A computer running VCI locally requires Windows XP Standard or Professional or Windows 2003 Server.

If you installed the CA Harvest r7.1 client with the VCI option and updated it to r7.1 Patch 2, then your computer meets the operating system requirements for running VCI r7.20.5.

    4.0 System Requirements

Before installing VCI r7.20.5, ensure that the computer meets the following system requirements.

    4.1 Software

The software requirements for installing VCI r7.20.5 include the following items:

  • The computer on which you install VCI r7.20.5 must have the CA Harvest r7.1 Patch 2 client with the VCI option installed.

  • All other CA Harvest components in your environment must be running CA Harvest r7.1 Patch 2. CA Harvest r7.1 Patch 2 is available from SupportConnect at http://ca.com/supportconnect

    4.2 Hardware Requirements

If you installed the CA Harvest r7.1 client with the VCI option and updated it to CA Harvest r7.1 Patch 2, then your computer meets the hardware requirements for installing VCI r7.20.5.

    5.0 Installation Considerations

Before installing VCI r7.20.5, be sure to review the following section carefully to determine if there are additional installation or configuration steps you need to follow for this release.

  • Ensure that the CA Harvest r7.1 Hot Fix 1 (Server) is applied to your CA Harvest r7.1 Patch 2 server installation so that VCI r7.20.5 will work properly with branch versions (PR6136).

  • If your site has a Windows server, this Hot Fix is included in CA Harvest r7.1 Patch 2 and you do not need to install the Hot Fix.

  • If your site has a server on a platform other than Windows, you must download the Hot Fix, separately from Patch 2, and then apply the Hot Fix.

Note: More information about the Hot Fix, and instructions to download the Hot Fix are available from SupportConnect at http://ca.com/supportconnect

6.0 How to Install VCI r7.20.5

Run the VCI r7.20.5 executable file to upgrade your existing CA Harvest client to include the new r7.20.5 features. These features enable VCI to more closely integrate with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 or 2005.

  • To install VCI r7.20.5 on local computers, see Install VCI r7.20.5 on Local Computers

  • To install VCI r7.20.5 on network computers, see Install VCI r7.20.5 on Network Computers

Important! If necessary, you can optionally roll back and remove VCI r7.20.5. For more information, see Roll Back and Remove VCI r7.20.5

6.1 Install VCI r7.20.5 on Local Computers

To install VCI r7.20.5 on a local computer

  • Close all Windows applications except Windows Explorer. Ensure that you close Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 or 2005 and any other IDE programs.

  • Ensure that the VCI r7.20.5 file (HarVCI7205.exe) is accessible to your computers, for example, on a network computer or a shared drive.

  • Copy the file to your computer and run it.

When the installation has completed successfully, you receive a confirmation message.

6.2 Install VCI r7.20.5 on Network Computers

Note: For background information about installing shared CA Harvest clients on a network, see the AllFusion Harvest r7.1 Installation Guide.

To install VCI r7.20.5 on a shared CA Harvest client on a Windows network computer

  • Uninstall the CA Harvest r7.1 client on all network computers.

  • On the network server computer that hosts the shared CA Harvest client, copy the existing CA Harvest r7 administrative image (the existing CA Harvest r7.1 administrative installation files and directories).

Note: The backup will be useful if you need to uninstall CA Harvest on any network computer after the existing administrative image is updated to VCI r7.20.5.

  • Run the VCI r7.20.5 executable (HarVCI7205.exe) on the administrative image of the shared CA Harvest client, by entering the following command at the command prompt on the network server computer:
     HarVCI7205.exe /v"/a "pathnameCA Software Change Manager Client.msi""

    pathname
Specifies the complete path name of the administrative image for the shared CA Harvest client network installation.

For example, if the path name of the image is c:Harvest71Client, enter the following command:
     HarVCI7205.exe /v"/a "c:Harvest7ClientCA Software Change Manager Client.msi""

  • Re-install the CA Harvest r7.1 client on all network computers, using the patched administrative images for VCI r7.20.5 that you created in the previous steps, not the administrative images from CA Harvest r7.1 GA. For more information, see the AllFusion  Harvest r7.1 Installation Guide.

6.3 Roll Back and Remove VCI r7.20.5

If necessary, you can roll back and remove VCI r7.20.5 using the Windows Add or Remove Programs option. You select VCI r7.20.5 in the list and click the Remove button. This option is available only when your computer meets the following requirements:

  • Your computer is running Windows XP and later.

  • Your computer is running Windows Installer 3.0 and later.

  • You have selected the Show updates check box in Windows Add or Remove Programs.

Important! When you uninstall and remove VCI r7.20.5, the CA Harvest r7.1 client Patch 2 is also uninstalled and removed.

7.0 After You Install VCI r7.20.5

After you install VCI r7.20.5, do the following:

  • Ensure that CA Harvest r7.1 Patch 2 is installed and running on all CA Harvest computers in your environment, not just the computers on which you installed VCI r7.20.5. If necessary, use the following information:

  • For instructions to install CA Harvest r7.1 GA, see the AllFusion  Harvest r7.1 Installation Guide. All CA Harvest documents are available in the Docs directory on the CA Harvest r7.1 installation media. The latest versions of these documents are available from SupportConnect at http://ca.com/supportconnect

  • CA Harvest r7.1 Patch 2 and its readme are available from SupportConnect at http://ca.com/supportconnect

  • Configure your existing solutions and projects for use with VCI r7.20.5. This process includes tasks that both CA Harvest administrators and Visual Studio .NET 2003 or 2005 developers need to perform. For more information, see the Version Control Interface User Guide.

  • Use the VCI r7.20.5 new features as you create and update applications in Visual Studio .NET 2003 or 2005. For more information, see the Version Control Interface User Guide.

    8.0 Published Fixes

For all published fixes for CA Harvest and VCI, see the Published Solutions available from SupportConnect at http://ca.com/supportconnect

    9.0 Known Issues

For Setup and Configuration projects, you cannot edit the item context, due to the EnvDTE Namespace in Microsoft Visual Studio not supporting this project. As a workaround, try the following:

  • In the Checkout dialog, use the toolbar to open the Advanced Context dialog, and change the Checkin and Checkout mode and package.

  • In the Checkout Group dialog, change the Checkout mode and package.
