Welcome to the Readme file for setting up CA Software Change Manager r7.1 (CA Software Change Manager) with a remote Ingres database. This readme file provides operating system support, system requirements, known issues, installation considerations, and related information only for using CA Software Change Manager with a remote Ingres database.

3.0 Introduction

As delivered, CA Software Change Manager installs local Ingres r3 version 3.0.3 (Ingres) databases with the CA Software Change Manager server only. This document explains how to install Ingres alone using the CA Software Change Manager installation CDs and the remote Ingres package downloads described in this document. For details, see the sections that apply to your CA Software Change Manager-Ingres environment:

    4.0 Setting Up CA Software Change Manager with an Ingres Client on Windows

    This section explains how to set up CA Software Change Manager to use an Ingres client on Windows. The basic steps follow.

  • Install the Ingres client version 3.0.3 if you have not already done so.

  • Install the CA Software Change Manager server on the same computer as the Ingres client if you have not already done so.

    Each step is explained in detail in the following sections.


    4.1 Install the Ingres Client

    On the same computer, first install the Ingres client version 3.0.3 and next install the CA Software Change Manager server. To install the Ingres client, follow these steps:

  • Review the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 Readme (see the section System Requirements, Windows, Ingres Client only (Remote Ingres Database)). Verify that your target computer meets the CA Software Change Manager requirements for the Ingres client.

  • Review the chapter "Installing Ingres on Windows" in the Ingres Getting Started. Using the information in that chapter, do the following:

  • Verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements for the Ingres client.

  • Perform all applicable pre-installation steps.

  • Download the remote Ingres package, HarvestR71_RemoteIngres_win.zip, from Technical Support at http://ca.com/support to a temporary location.

  • Unzip the file to a temporary location and double-click install.exe to launch the Ingres setup wizard.

  • Enter EI for Installation ID in the setup wizard.

    Note: CA Software Change Manager requires the Ingres EI instance.

  • To install the Ingres client, select Custom on the Setup Type page and clear all Ingres components except Ingres/Net in the Custom Setup page.

  • Review the chapter "Installing Ingres on Windows" in the Ingres Getting Started and complete the setup wizard to install and configure your Ingres installation.

  • Check the %II_SYSTEM%ingresfilesinstall.log file to verify that the Ingres client installed successfully.


    4.2 Install the CA Software Change Manager Server

    After installing the Ingres client, install the CA Software Change Manager server on the same computer (the computer on which you already installed the Ingres client). To install the Harvest server, follow these steps:

  • If you have not already done so, review the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 Readme and verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements for the CA Software Change Manager server.

  • Review the chapter "Upgrading or Installing the Harvest Server on Windows" in the CA Software Change Manager Installation Guide and perform all applicable pre-installation steps in that chapter.

  • Start the CA Software Change Manager server installation program provided on the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 installation media labeled CA Software Change Manager for Windows Server.

  • When prompted to select a custom or express installation, click Custom.

  • On the Custom Setup dialog, do not select Ingres. Select all other components.

  • Finish the installation. At the end of the installation, choose to launch the Harvest Multi-Database Configuration Utility (the database configuration utility).

  • Perform the steps listed in the section Establish Communication between the CA Software Change Manager Server and the Remote Ingres Database later in this document.

  • Review the chapter "Upgrading or Installing the Harvest Server on Windows" in the CA Software Change Manager Installation Guide and perform all applicable post-installation steps in that chapter.


    5.0 Setting Up a Remote Ingres Database on Windows

    To set up a remote Ingres database server on Windows, perform the following tasks.

  • Install the Ingres DBMS server.

  • Install the CA Management Database (MDB).

    Each step is explained in detail in the sections that follow.

    The CA Management Database (MDB) contains the CA Software Change Manager database tables.


    5.1 Install the Ingres DBMS Server

    If you plan to use a remote Ingres database and install only the Ingres client on the CA Software Change Manager server, the Ingres requirements are:

    To set up a remote Ingres database server on Windows, install the Ingres server on the remote database computer (a computer other than the CA Software Change Manager server) using the following steps:

  • Review the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 Readme (see the section System Requirements, Windows, Ingres Server (local Ingres database)) and verify that the target computer meets the CA Software Change Manager requirements for the Ingres server.

  • Review the chapter "Installing Ingres on Windows" in the Ingres Getting Started. Using the information in that chapter, do the following:

  • Verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements for the Ingres server.

  • Perform all applicable pre-installation steps.

  • Download the remote Ingres package, HarvestR71_RemoteIngres_win.zip, from Technical Support at http://ca.com/support to a temporary location.

  • Unzip the downloaded file to a temporary location and double-click install.exe to launch Ingres setup wizard.

  • Enter EI for the Installation ID in the setup wizard. CA Software Change Manager requires the Ingres EI instance.

  • Review the chapter "Installing Ingres on Windows" in the Ingres Getting Started and use the setup wizard pages to install and configure your Ingres installation.

  • If you select Custom on the Setup Type page, select the items Ingres DBMS and Ingres/Net on the custom setup page of the setup wizard to install the required components for the Ingres database server.

  • On the Ingres configuration page of the setup wizard:

  • Select Start Ingres Automatically at System Startup.

  • Enter the Service Password (the password of the operating system user account that you are using to install Ingres).

  • On the Ingres DBMS configuration page of the setup wizard, set the transaction log file size to 512 MB.

    CA Software Change Manager requires the transaction log file size to be a minimum of 512 MB.

  • Complete setup wizard pages.

    Your Ingres installation is installed and configured.

  • Check the %II_SYSTEM%ingresfilesinstall.log file to verify that the Ingres DBMS server installed successfully.


    5.2 Install the MDB

    Important! Before installing the MDB, make sure Ingres installed and started properly.

    Important! If you have more than one Ingres instance installed, set the system variable, II_SYSTEM, to the installation location of the Ingres instance you want.

    Use the following procedure to install the MDB:

  • Open a new DOS window.

  • Change the current directory to the temporary location where you unzipped the remote Ingres package, HarvestR71_RemoteIngres_win.zip.

  • Run the batch file harvestmdbsetup.bat from the command line.

    The batch file installs the MDB and optimizes the CA Software Change Manager tables in the MDB.


    6.0 Upgrading Ingres on Windows

    Important! If you are upgrading the Ingres DBMS server, the Ingres upgrade wizard stops Ingres during the upgrade process. To ensure Ingres properly stopped, stop the CA Software Change Manager broker, broker service and any other CA products that are connecting to the Ingres DBMS server.

    This section explains how to upgrade your Ingres or Ingres client only on Windows. The basic steps follow.

  • Upgrade the Ingres client.

  • Upgrade the MDB if necessary.

    Each step is explained in detail in the following sections.


    6.1 Upgrade Ingres or the Ingres Client Only

    To upgrade a remote Ingres or Ingres client only on Windows, follow these steps:

  • Review the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 Readme (see the section System Requirements, Windows, CA Software Change Manager Server with Local Ingres Database (Upgrade)) and verify that the target computer meets the CA Software Change Manager requirements for upgrading the Ingres server.

  • Review the chapter "Installing Ingres on Windows" in the Ingres Getting Started for details about any of the related steps in this procedure.

  • Using the information in that chapter, do the following:

  • Verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements for the Ingres server.

  • Perform all applicable pre-installation steps.

  • Download the remote Ingres package, HarvestR71_RemoteIngres_win.zip, from Technical Support at http://ca.com/support to a temporary location.

  • Unzip the downloaded file to a temporary location and double-click install.exe to launch Ingres setup wizard.

  • Select the installation ID, EI, from the existing Ingres installations in the setup wizard. CA Software Change Manager requires the Ingres EI instance.

  • Select yes if asked to shutdown Ingres.

  • Select yes when asked to upgrade all of the databases.

  • Complete the Ingres upgrade using the setup wizard.

  • Check the %II_SYSTEM%ingresfilesinstall.log file to verify that the Ingres DBMS server installed successfully.


    6.2 Upgrade the MDB

    Important!

  • If you are upgrading an Ingres DBMS server, you also need to upgrade the MDB that contains the CA Software Change Manager database tables. If you are upgrading and Ingres Client only, skip this step.

  • Before upgrading the MDB, make sure Ingres r3 version 3.0.3 is installed or upgraded and started properly.

  • If you have more than one Ingres instance installed, set the system variable II_SYSTEM to the installation location of the Ingres instance you want.

    To upgrade the MDB, follow these steps:

  • Open a new DOS window.

  • Change the current directory to the temporary location where you extracted the remote Ingres package, HarvestR71_RemoteIngres_win.zip

  • Run the batch file harvestmdbsetup.bat from the command line to install the MDB and optimize the CA Software Change Manager tables in the MDB.

  • Check the %II_SYSTEM%ingresfilesinstall_mdb.log file to verify that the MDB upgraded successfully.


    7.0 Setting Up CA Software Change Manager with an Ingres Client on Linux

    This section explains how to set up CA Software Change Manager to use an Ingres client on Linux. The basic steps follow. Each step is explained in detail in the following sections.

  • Install the Ingres client.

  • Install the CA Software Change Manager server on the same computer as the Ingres client.


    7.1 Install the Ingres Client

    On the same computer, first install the Ingres client and next install the CA Software Change Manager server. To install the Ingres client, follow these steps:

  • Review the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 Readme and verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements for the Ingres client (see the section System Requirements, UNIX and Linux, Ingres Client Only - for Remote Ingres Database).

  • Review the chapter "Installing Ingres for Linux" in the Ingres Getting Started and verify that the target computer also meets the installation requirements for the Ingres client, in addition to the requirements for CA Software Change Manager server.

  • Verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements for the Ingres server.

  • Perform all applicable pre-installation steps.

  • Download the remote Ingres package, HarverstR71_RemoteIngres_Linux.tar.gz, from Technical Support at http://ca.com/support to a temporary location.

  • Uncompress and extract the downloaded file to a temporary location.

  • Log in as the root user (the user named root) and run the install.sh file from the temporary location.

  • Select Option 1 to install the Ingres client.

  • Follow the prompts to complete the installation.


    7.2 Install the CA Software Change Manager Server

    After installing the Ingres client, install the CA Software Change Manager server on the same computer (the computer on which you already installed the Ingres client). To install the CA Software Change Manager server, follow these steps:

  • If you have not already done so, review the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 Readme (see the section System Requirements, UNIX and Linux, Ingres Server (local Ingres database)) and verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements for the CA Software Change Manager server.

  • Review the chapter "Upgrading or Installing the Harvest Server on UNIX or Linux" in the CA Software Change Manager Installation Guide and perform all applicable pre-installation tasks in that chapter.

  • Start the CA Software Change Manager server installation wizard provided on the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 installation media labeled CA Software Change Manager for Windows Server.

  • Perform a custom installation of the CA Software Change Manager server.

    Review the section, Perform a Custom Installation of the Harvest Server, in the chapter "Upgrading or Installing the Harvest Server on UNIX or Linux" in the CA Software Change Manager Installation Guide.

  • Select Ingres as the database type when prompted.

  • Enter the location of Ingres installation when prompted for the II_SYSTEM.

  • Follow the prompts and finish the installation.

  • At the end of the installation, enter Y to launch the database configuration utility.

  • Perform the steps listed in the section, Establish Communication between the CA Software Change Manager Server and the Remote Ingres Database, later in this document.

  • Review the chapter "Upgrading or Installing the Harvest Server on UNIX and Linux" in the CA Software Change Manager Installation Guide and perform all applicable post-installation steps in that chapter.


    8.0 Setting Up a Remote Ingres Database on Linux

    To set up a remote Ingres database on Linux, install the Ingres server on the remote database computer (a computer other than the CA Software Change Manager server). To do so, follow these steps:

  • Review the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 Readme and verify that your target computer meets the CA Software Change Manager requirements for the Ingres server.

  • Review the chapter "Installing Ingres for Linux" in the Ingres for Linux Getting Started and using the information in that chapter, do the following:

  • Verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements for the Ingres server.

  • Perform all applicable pre-installation steps.

  • Download the remote Ingres package, HarverstR71_RemoteIngres_Linux.tar.gz, from Technical Support at http://ca.com/support to a temporary location.

  • Uncompress and extract the downloaded file to a temporary location.

  • Log in as the root user (the user named root) and run the install.sh file, selecting Option 2 to install the Ingres server.

  • Choose an express or custom installation, depending on how you want to configure Ingres.

  • The express installation option installs Ingres with default installation parameters and the following parameters that CA Software Change Manager requires:

    – II_SYSTEM as /opt/CA/Ingres EI

    – II_INSTALLATION as EI

    – LOG_KBYTES as 160000

  • The custom installation option installs Ingres with II_INSTALLATION set as EI and the following customizable settings:

    – II_SYSTEM

    – II_WORK

    – II_CHECKPOINT

    – II_JOURNAL

    – II_DUMP

    – II_TIMEZONE_NAME and II_CHARSET

    For the definitions of the Ingres installation parameters, see the appendix, "UNIX Installation Worksheet" in the Ingres Getting Started.

  • Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

  • Perform all remaining applicable tasks in the chapter "Installing Ingres for Linux" in the Ingres Getting Started.

    Note: Performing these steps installs the CA Management Database (MDB), the standard database schema for storing CA product data. The MDB installs automatically when you install a CA solution that supports the MDB for the DBMS and the operating system you are using.


    9.0 Updating Ingres on Linux

    To upgrade a remote Ingres or Ingres client only on Linux, follow these steps:

  • If you are upgrading a remote Ingres DBMS server, review the CA Software Change Manager r7.1 Readme (see the section System Requirements, UNIX and Linux, CA Software Change Manager Server with a Local Ingres Database (Upgrade)) and verify that the target computer meets the CA Software Change Manager requirements for upgrading the Ingres server.

  • Review the chapter "Installing Ingres on Linux" in the Ingres Getting Started. See that chapter for details about any of the related steps in this procedure.

    Using the information in that chapter, do the following:

  • Verify that the target machine meets the installation requirements for the Ingres client.

  • Perform all applicable pre-installation steps.

  • Download the remote Ingres package, HarverstR71_RemoteIngres_Linux.tar.gz, from Technical Support at http://ca.com/support.

  • Uncompress and extract the downloaded file to a temporary location.

  • Log in as the root user (the user named root) and run the install.sh file.

  • Select Option 3 to upgrade the Ingres client.

  • When prompted to enter II_SYSTEM, enter your Ingres installation directory.

  • Follow the prompts to complete the upgrade.

    If you are upgrading the Ingres DBMS server, the upgrade process upgrades your Ingres to version 3.0.3 and the MDB to the required version.

  • Check the $II_SYSTEMingresfilesinstall_mdb.log file to verify that the MDB upgraded successfully.


    10.0 Establish Communication between the CA Software Change Manager Server and the Remote Ingres Database

    You can set up the CA Software Change Manager server to communicate with the remote Ingres database in the following ways:

  • From an CA Software Change Manager server with an Ingres client on Windows to a remote Ingres database on Windows or Linux

  • From an CA Software Change Manager server with an Ingres client on Linux to a remote Ingres database on Windows or Linux

    To establish communication from an CA Software Change Manager server on Windows or Linux to a remote Ingres database on either Windows or Linux, use the database configuration utility to perform these steps on the CA Software Change Manager server:

  • Create an Ingres virtual node.

  • Configure your ODBC DSN.

  • Encrypt the database user's user name and password.

    For more information about performing these steps, see the chapter "Installing Configuring, and Maintaining Your Database" in the CA Software Change Manager Installation Guide.

    Important! If you installed the CA Software Change Manager server on Windows as a service, verify that the login type of the virtual node you created is global. By default, the database configuration utility creates virtual nodes as private.


    11.0 Troubleshooting


    11.1 Linux

    If the Ingres server installation or upgrade fails, use the information in this section for troubleshooting. The following lists the major steps performed when you install the Ingres server. Check the log file for each step, especially for any errors that may have occurred during that step.

  • Install or upgrade the Ingres server. Check the $II_SYSTEM/ingres/files/install.log file on the Ingres server.

  • Install or upgrade the MDB. Check the $II_SYSTEM/ingres/files/install_mdb.log file on the Ingres server.


    11.2 Windows

    If the Ingres server installation or upgrade fails or MDB installation or upgrade fails, use the information in this section for troubleshooting. The following list contains the major steps performed when you install the Ingres server; check the log file for each step, especially for any errors that may have occurred during that step:

  • Install or upgrade the Ingres server. Check the %II_SYSTEM%ingresfilesinstall.log file on the Ingres server.

  • Install or upgrade the MDB. Check the %II_SYSTEM%ingresfilesinstall_mdb.log file on the Ingres server.

  • Run the scripts to optimize the CA Software Change Manager tables. Check the %II_SYSTEM%ingresfilesHarvest_Ingres_MDB_maintenance.log file on the Ingres server.

    14.0 Known Issues

    If you create an Ingres virtual node and the user password for the virtual nodes contains the # sign, you may receive an error indicating too many data items. Use the Ingres Visual DBA or the Ingres netutil command to create virtual nodes. For more information about creating virtual nodes, see the Ingres Connectivity Guide.
