In the industrial age, wealth was produced by applying capital and intellectual property to raw materials, energy and labor. In the digital age, wealth is being produced by applying capital and intellectual property to code, virtual infrastructure and highly specialized technical skill sets. Given these new business realities, agile and DevOps have emerged as critical business imperatives. In fact, research done by Coleman Parkes Research on behalf of my company CA Technologies indicates that agile and DevOps in tandem have a significant impact on KPIs at all levels of the business -- from retention of scarce, high-value skill sets to acceleration of decision-making and time to market.
However, this research also indicates substantial disparities in the adoption of agile and DevOps best practices, with only about a third of surveyed organizations having broadly adopted either one. Business leaders need to be aggressive and intentional about driving adoption of agile and DevOps. The success of their business -- and perhaps even its very existence -- depends on it.
Agile And DevOps Together For Better Business Results
Agile, a highly iterative approach to app development, helps businesses understand how the customer feels about a product early and often, ensuring that developers write the right code for the right reasons. DevOps accelerates and improves the reliability of the process by which that code goes into production. So, together, agile and DevOps transform an organization’s digital “metabolism,” making the concept-to-monetization pipeline faster, leaner and better governed.
Coleman Parkes surveyed 1,770 senior business and IT executives worldwide to better understand adoption of agile and DevOps. Key findings included:
- Advanced agile adopters can respond to new opportunities 40% faster.
- Advanced DevOps adopters can deliver new capabilities to market 42% faster.
- 88% of advanced agile adopters and 87% of advanced DevOps adopters achieve tangible improvements in customer experience.
- Agile plus DevOps improves new business growth by 63% more than agile alone.
- Agile plus DevOps improves operational efficiency by 41% more than agile alone.
