New Study Reveals 57 Percent of Australian Respondents Have Adopted or Plan to Adopt a DevOps Approach

Australian organisations experience an increase in customers using their software/services by 30 percent thanks to DevOps

Sydney, 14 January 2014 – A new global study commissioned by CA Technologies (NASDAQ:CA) reveals that more than half of the respondents from Australia have already adopted or are planning to adopt a DevOps approach.

According to the study, TechInsights Report: What Smart Businesses Know About DevOps, DevOps has enabled organisations in Australia to increase the number of customers using their software and services by 30 per cent, while reducing the amount they spend on development and operations by 19 per cent.

The study also reveals that IT leaders in Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) have seen concrete business benefits as a result of their organisations’ implementation of DevOps. Respondents that have implemented DevOps have also seen a 23 percent increase in revenue and a 26 percent increase in the number of software and services explored and developed.

DevOps is a methodology that helps foster collaboration between the teams that create and test applications (Dev) with those that maintain them in production environments (Ops). Vanson Bourne conducted the survey of 1,300 senior IT decision-makers worldwide, including 450 in APJ, on behalf of CA Technologies to learn about the global awareness and adoption of DevOps.

Fifty-seven percent of the respondents in Australia have already adopted or are planning to adopt a DevOps approach, which is supported by a further 65 percent of respondents who agree that there is now a greater need for DevOps strategies.

As part of their implementation methodology, over the next year, 59 percent of respondents intend to hire new resources with necessary skills, 73 percent plan to invest in more training for development and operations personnel, and 69 percent plan to invest in new tools.

“In today’s world of mobile apps and online consumer reviews, companies are under enormous pressure to deliver higher quality applications faster than ever before,” said Sumal Karunanayake, vice president, Application Delivery, CA Technologies. “Companies, which have been around for more than 20 to 30 years, face big challenges as they have legacy systems. Those that are willing to undergo internal transformation can win the competition in our fast-changing markets.”

The report also reveals that awareness of the benefits associated with DevOps has increased—particularly as a means to better address customer demands and improve the overall customer experience.

The report indicates that both the business and the IT departments are equally focused on DevOps. Forty-five per cent will measure success by looking primarily at external business factors, like increased revenue, faster time-to-market and improved competitive positioning. While 47 percent will measure success by looking primarily at internal factors, such as lower costs, fewer bugs and improved efficiencies.

The knowledge and skills most needed within development and operations to implement this methodology successfully are knowledge of the overall priorities, strategies and metrics of the business (cited by 57 percent of respondents), followed by knowledge of current business processes and how they work (45 per cent).

“CA is taking an innovative and progressing position of leadership in DevOps,” said Karunanayake. “The report paints a clear picture of what companies in Australia can expect to gain by embracing the new strategy and transforming their IT organisation. DevOps is evolving from the theoretical into an essential strategic approach for all businesses.”
