Section 508

What is it?

In 1998 the US Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Inaccessible technology interferes with an individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily. Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information technology, to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of technologies that will help achieve these goals. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. § 794d), agencies must give disabled employees and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others.

Section 508 support is normally requested by Civilian agencies when acquiring COTS software. CA is committed to Section 508 focused on compliance for its products.

What CA Solutions Support it?

Currently software vendors are required to self-certify conformance to Section 508 requirements. Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs) provide a status that agencies can use to determine products compatibility with the standard. To view a VPAT for a CA product contact your account manager if you are customer. If you are prospect interested in CA products and want to see a VPAT please contact CA at +1 866 836-5234.
