What can bobsledding teach us about continuous testing?
Not enough speed when testing, means applications are delayed, allowing competitors to gain an edge.
About 10 years ago I decided to do something crazy and try the bobsled run in Park City, Utah. For a princely sum of money you and 2 of your family or friends can climb into a sled with a trained pilot and go careening down the course. After about 55 seconds you will have experienced 70 mph turns with G forces exceeding your comfort zone for sure. I was in the back of the sled and so I took the brunt of everyone’s combined weight going into each turn. It was an experience that I’ll never forget. It was fast, exhilarating, and over much sooner than I had expected!
Next month begins the biggest Winter event of year and bob sledding will be one of the premier events. I watch this event with a different perspective because I’ve experienced it. Of course, I was just a passenger and I relied on the skill of a trained pilot who knew how to navigate each turn, adjust our speed and deliver us safely to the bottom of the $25 million course. Speed matters. Not enough speed and the team will lose the race. Too much speed can be catastrophic and end the team’s chance for gold.
Speed matters when testing applications
Testing has become the bobsled run of Continuous Delivery. Not enough speed when testing means applications are delayed, allowing competitors to gain an edge. Too much speed without the right testing tools or approach can also deliver negative results. Applications are rushed to market with defects. These defects impact revenue damage brand reputation. The right balance between speed and direction matters when companies are trying to achieve the goal of continuous application delivery. It takes a team of testers, developers and ops to achieve testing gold. It takes communication and open dialogue.
Development teams (ops, dev, QA) within companies understand that in order to compete successfully in today’s economy, they have to deliver software faster, with higher quality, reduced risk and cost.
