Transforming financial services to meet the ‘mobile-first’ customer expectation

David Januchowski tells about the evolution of M&T Bank’s relationship with CA Technologies.

I caught up with CA World presenter, David Januchowski, about the evolution of M&T Bank’s relationship with CA Technologies, the role of technology in financial services, and the impact of security and API management on the mobile-first experience.

Our conversation

CO: Hi Dave! Thanks for taking the time to speak with me today. To start, can you give us a bit of background about yourself and your current role at M&T Bank?

DJ: Glad to speak with you. I’ve been an Enterprise Architect with M&T Bank for two and a half years now. Before that, I worked as an Enterprise Architect, Solutions Architect, and Developer in the Healthcare and Financial Services industries for over 20 years. I’m currently leading projects at M&T Bank related to our initiatives in commercial, credit, and digital banking and payments. In particular, I’ve been very focused on how technology can solve business problems for financial services.

CO: Absolutely. Technology as a business driver is a big focus here at CA as well. Which leads to my next question. What challenges were you hoping to solve at M&T Bank through working with CA?

DJ: M&T Bank needed to connect our native mobile app to enterprise services, and we needed a way to expose our services to external vendors and partners through APIs.

CO: What was the process of selecting CA API Gateway in particular?

DJ: M&T has a long partnership with CA, specifically around CA’s security suite. For this new API project, we carefully evaluated leading API solutions in the marketplace and established criteria that were critical for M&T, including: governance, API security, traffic orchestration and caching, and cloud and legacy integration, among others. After performing multiple onsite and offsite reviews, we determined that CA API Gateway was the solution for M&T Bank.

CO: What business objectives were you hoping to accomplish through implementing the CA API Gateway?

DJ: Within financial services, the customer expectation is a mobile-first expectation. To effectively deliver on this and react to faster rate of change, M&T Bank needed a more robust way to deliver services. Specifically, we implemented the CA API Gateway to:

  1. Accelerate digital transformation by delivering better customer experiences across multiple devices and channels.
  2. Achieve trusted, consistent, and repeatable security when integrating across apps, devices, and businesses leveraging our investment in CA security products.
  3. Solve the challenge of integrating systems, adapting services, orchestrating data, and rapidly creating modern, enterprise-grade APIs from different sources.

CO: What are the key features of CA API Gateway that were important to achieving these goals?

DJ: There were several. The ability to integrate into our CA security products, adherence to security standards like OAuth, out of the box adapters to industry leading solutions like Salesforce, cache engine integrations, and the ability to run as a virtual appliance. Additionally, CA’s Developer Portal was a competitive advantage.

CO: How would you describe your experience working with CA?

DJ: CA has competitive products in the marketplace, and has proven industry expertise. That has been indispensable.

CO: Finally, how do you see your relationship with CA evolving in the future?

DJ: We now have several key products from CA including CA Project Portfolio Management (PPM) and CA Single Sign On (SSO). As we continue our digital transformation, CA is a critical partner for M&T Bank.

CO: Thank you so much for your time, Dave! Looking forward to seeing you at CA World this year.
