What a hearty breakfast can teach us about full-stack monitoring
Using monitoring and analytics to deliver top notch digital interactions with customers.
A full stack, that’s what I like. Yes, this is a technology blog and I am writing about pancakes. Pancakes are good. Flapjacks. Even crepes (those really thin pancakes). All good.
But when you need a full stack and only get a half stack, or even worse a single stack, it can be pretty disappointing. That’s true whether we are talking about delicious pancakes or the monitoring and analytics tools that IT Operations Management (ITOM) professionals use.
To push the food analogy a little further – with pancakes, the stack is made up of very similar things. A pancake is pretty much a pancake. But in the world of monitoring and analytics, the elements of a given digital delivery chain can be quite different. These elements include the application itself, the microservices, cloud services or APIs it uses, gateways, switches, middleware and connectivity layers, servers (both physical and virtual) and storage, and so on.
It makes senses that monitoring tooling need to take into account the uniqueness of each element: application monitoring for applications, infrastructure monitoring for infrastructure and networking monitoring for networks. But when your organization seeks to deliver top notch digital interactions with customers that will differentiate your business, there are three key things you’ll want to consider.
Really, you need the best of both worlds: pancakes and bacon. In other words, choose a solution that has both an element-focused toolset as well as an integrated approach. You’ll be able to get the depth and breadth for each element of your digital stack and still have end to end monitoring and analytics.
