With the summer in full swing, you’ve probably enjoyed a few evenings watching the latest movies in theaters or online. I was recently reminded of a much older big-screen scene: a dry, dusty street in the Old West with two cowboys facing each other, hands over their holsters. One drawls out the iconic line… “This town ain’t big enough for the both of us!”
This scene comes to mind now because it’s still happening… or at least some companies think it is. In a showdown being played out between mainframe and the cloud—where some think there’s room for only one platform in the streets of global business.
But, in the final scene of this Old-West-style story, you find out: “Big Iron” and “The Cloud” aren’t sworn enemies. Instead, they’re partners (dare I say pardners); in fact, working together, they can achieve so much more!
Breaking the Myth: How Platforms are Working Together
The proliferation of cloud is old news now. We mainframers recognize the growth and value of the cloud compute infrastructure. After all, according to Forbes, spending on cloud computing has grown more than 4 times the rate of IT spending since 2009.
In the recent 2018 State of the Open Mainframe Survey Report, a study CA Technologies engaged in as part of our membership in the Open Mainframe Project, the vast majority of survey respondents, however, said that they consider the cloud an augmentation to (rather than a replacement for) the mainframe. In fact, respondents didn’t consider cloud environments as securable, nor as great a value for the cost, as the mainframe.
In an ideal world: businesses leverage the best of both computing worlds to create a hybrid, multi-cloud environment, thereby optimizing their systems to achieve digital transformation.
In support of this approach, our teams here at CA Technologies are constantly driving the capabilities of the mainframe forward with innovative solutions designed to help the enterprise harness both the intrinsic powers of the mainframe platform and the ease and agility of cloud deployment.
One of our most exciting new releases is CA Brightside. CA Brightside is the first cross-enterprise DevOps solution, designed to empower enterprise development teams to control, script, and build on the mainframe using familiar open source tools. The end goal? To make access to and interaction with the mainframe no different than any other platform.
Adapting to the Anything-as-a-Service Model
Did you know: by the end of 2018, spending on IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) will total nearly $547B, and it’s estimated that by 2022 more than half of all IT spending will be dedicated to ITaaS.
There will be multiple iterations for customers to take advantage of the as-a-Service (XaaS) model–which provides easily scalable and consumption-based services. Mainframe, like other platforms, has its place in the XaaS world as Mainframe-as-a-Service can reduce cost and drive a more predictable operating-expense (OPEX) model.
CA Technologies recently teamed up with our long-term partner, IBM, to jointly develop and sell new services for IBM’s Cloud Managed Services on zSystems, better known as zCloud. This frictionless cloud platform allows you to access mainframe applications via a cloud-based infrastructure—the first truly viable option for mainframe services in the cloud.
With the help of IBM and CA Technologies, you can now enable your teams to quickly access development, testing, application management, and regulatory compliance services, and quickly transform your enterprise into a digital giant.
Exploring the Next Frontier
Though the American frontier has long been explored, the exploration of the technological frontier is only at its nascence, expanding again and again into new and unchartered territories—and its continued growth is inevitable. Today’s story, like that of the West, is one of change, challenge, and persistence.
Innovation on the mainframe is a defining part of this story.
CA Technologies is constantly architecting ways to help you develop, run, and manage mainframe applications—be it in the cloud or on-premise—to provide you with the agility you need to optimize the infrastructure and encourage cross-enterprise collaboration—all of which drive digital transformation and propel your business forward.
