Dr. Victor Muntés-Mulero is currently Vice President of Strategic Research and an entrepreneur at CA Technologies Office of the CTO, leading the CA Strategic Research Labs in Barcelona and coordinating the research in EMEA. He is responsible for leading research in EMEA that has the potential to impact the strategic direction of CA Technologies products and services. His duties include identifying opportunities within the company that can be transformed into research relationships performed in collaboration with university faculty and students.
Dr. Muntés-Mulero has more than 40 peer-reviewed research publications in the computer field, as well as several granted patents. He is also the author of a book titled “Genetic Query Optimization for Large Databases”, as well as three book chapters on data anonymization, graph database storage and multicloud computing, respectively.
Prior to joining CA, Dr. Muntés-Mulero was an associate professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where he performed research related to managing very large data volumes. Victor is also one of the founders of Sparsity Technologies S.L., a spin-off started at UPC.
Dr. Muntés-Mulero received his Ph.D in May 2007. His Ph.D studies were funded by IBM through its Center for Advanced Studies (Toronto, Canada), and were focused on very large join query optimization for relational databases. Besides his regular lecturing at UPC, he has also taught master courses related to relational database management systems and data stream processing and mining, at University of Reading (Reading, UK, 2003) and Pontifícia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá, Colombia, 2011), respectively. Victor was also named Honorary Professor of Universidad San Martín de Porres, in Lima, Perú, in August 2015. He was also awarded with the IBM Faculty Award in 2009.
Besides, he has been the chair of two international workshops: PAVLAD (ACM First International Workshop on Privacy and Anonymity for Very Large Datasets), in conjunction with CIKM 2009; and UIM-GDB (University-Industry Meeting on Graph Databases), in 2011.
