The competition brought together students from business and information technology disciplines to demonstrate and evaluate the strategic value of IT management for an organization. Ten global teams, comprised of three graduate students with at least one student pursuing a degree in information technology (IT) or information systems (IS), participated in the event.
The winners included:
First Place: Brian Eshpeter, Laura Higgins and Carolyn Nalder from The University of Calgary were awarded $10,000.
Second Place: Ravi Dhanwani, Telma Frege and Karthik Sekhar from the University of South Florida were awarded $5,000.
Third Place: Andreas Nielsen, Christian Refshauge and Mads Wadstroem from Copenhagen Business School were awarded $2,500.
Prior to arriving at the competition, the teams were provided with a case study on a company in the throes of change. This year's case study was provided by global payments technology company, Visa Inc. (NYSE: V). During the competition, teams presented their recommendations on how the company could adapt and align its IT infrastructure to take advantage of new business opportunities and adjacent markets, while leveraging its extensive IT capabilities.
“We were impressed by the students’ presentations and recommendations,” said Scott Edington, Global Head of R&D, Visa Inc. “Supporting this Case Competition aligns with our Open Innovation model, so we were delighted to provide an opportunity for the students to showcase their skills in providing potential value to our business.”
“The quality of work shown by the participating students was excellent,” said Connie Smallwood, vice president, Innovation and University Programs, CA Technologies. “We are proud to provide this valuable experience of addressing a real business problem in a setting that emphasizes collaboration and innovation.”
