Eurosport, the number one sport destination and undisputed Home of Cycling in Europe, has partnered with market-leading software and solutions provider, CA Technologies, in a cross-platform sponsorship and integrated technology collaboration.
Central to the partnership is the creation an unrivalled second-screen app experience for cycling fans which launches during Eurosport’s ongoing coverage of the Giro d’Italia. Using CA API Management and CA App Experience Analytics tools, for the first time Eurosport will be offering a live interactive map with rider data throughout this year’s Giro d’Italia and other key races throughout the season.
The new tools will be built into Eurosport’s existing App and mobile web products to allow fans to track the peloton every pedal of the race as well as providing select individual rider GPS and biometric data, such as their altitude, speed, power, cadence and heart rate, in real-time. Eurosport will also use the new tools as part of its on-air graphics to enhance its live TV coverage, giving viewers and experts a deeper analysis than ever before.
CA API Management will enable the data integration and live-feed of the rider metrics directly into Eurosport’s new interactive map across both mobile and web apps. In order to deliver a premium user experience, CA App Experience Analytics will provide Eurosport with real-user insights to optimize app design, navigation and flow, and will deliver key app analytics to improve app performance and stability.
Eurosport will also be producing additional digital and short-form cycling content, incorporating the new data streams, to be included on the App and its mobile web products. This will include stage previews and reviews, analysis of the key moments featuring slow motion and zoom footage and new ‘Sport Explainers’ – the exclusive Eurosport series explaining the key technical moments in sport – which will be sponsored by CA Technologies.
Additionally, as official software partner for Eurosport's coverage of the Grand Tours, CA Technologies will also receive significant multi-platform branding through on-air and digital advertising and sponsored content.
Peter Hutton, CEO Eurosport, said: “We are always looking at ways to enhance and complement our coverage of the world greatest sporting events and this partnership and app development ensures we are doing that for cycling’s premium races this year. We know that passionate sports fans love to have all the stats and data at their fingertips and this partnership with CA Technologies, alongside our TV coverage, will enable our cycling fans to access everything they need.”
He added: “This is the next step in our digital transformation and the systems provided by CA Technologies allow us to take cycling fans closer to the peloton than ever before. We will enable viewers to put themselves at the centre of the action, giving them a better understanding of the race, the riders and the stories on the road as they unfold.”
Lauren Flaherty, chief marketing officer, CA Technologies said: “CA Technologies is proud to partner with Eurosport, and we are delighted that they have turned to our API Management and Application Performance solutions to create an unrivalled customer experience. While television remains the most popular way to watch major sporting events, second-screen experiences enabled through apps have become increasingly important to viewers. The use of solutions from CA Technologies will enhance Eurosport’s data integration capabilities while providing an interactive and immersive co-viewing experience for fans that truly differentiates their cycling coverage.”
In 2017, Eurosport’s unparalleled cycling calendar once again covers all three of the Grand Tours, with exclusive and extended Giro d’Italia coverage, plus 25 UCI World Tour events, including all five Monuments. In total Eurosport will show over 200 days of live cycling and 2,300 hours of coverage across its channels this year.
Tour de France stage winner and Eurosport’s lead cycling analyst, Juan Antonio Flecha, comments: “This partnership is great news for cycling fans and provides them with more race information than ever before for the sport’s most prestigious races. Data is hugely important to professional riders and teams and now fans can view some of the key information in real-time during Eurosport’s live coverage, and for free via the Eurosport app. As an analyst it also gives me greater insight in to what is happening on the road and I look forward to explaining this to viewers throughout the season.”
