Our business and the SDGs

Our sustainability priorities

Measuring progress

In the context of technology, sustainability takes on new meaning. It’s about enabling business transformation through software. It’s about seizing opportunities and efficiencies created by new technologies, such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence (AI). And it’s about keeping vital data safe and secure as it increasingly becomes a strategic asset.

At CA Technologies, we understand this new definition of sustainability because we helped create it. As a customer-centric organization, we leverage our Built to Change philosophy and agile approach to development to help our customers thrive in the app economy.

About This Report

This Sustainability Report covers our progress in sustainability through the 2016 calendar year, with highlights from the beginning of 2017. This year, we are reporting in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Standards at the “Core” level. That means we have assessed our most material environmental, social and economic impacts and have aligned our reporting with them. This report also incorporates the Ten Principles of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact. In keeping with our goal of best-practice sustainability reporting, this is our sixth consecutive report that includes external assurance of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Stakeholder Engagement

We engage with our stakeholders in many ways. Through the leadership and assistance of our Board of Directors and the members of our Executive Management Team, CA Technologies continues our participation with the UN Global Compact (UNGC) and our engagement with Ceres and its policy arm, BICEP (Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy). Through our engagement with the UNGC and Ceres, we’re able to increase our interactions with a network of companies, investors, environmental organizations, public interest groups and governments that seek to address sustainability challenges. And being a Ceres network company continues to deliver credibility, expertise and a depth of experience in driving sustainability leadership and best practices. Together with Ceres, we have identified key stakeholders of diverse viewpoints who provide valuable insights into our business.

Our Alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals

At CA we carefully consider the relationship between our business and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Below, we have outlined these goals based on their relevance to our operations and sustainability areas of focus.

Primary Focus

Quality education and gender equality are core to our commitments around diversity and STEM education. CA is also strongly committed to affordable and clean energy, and climate action. And our company has historically sought out partnerships—with nonprofits, nongovernmental organizations, government agencies, and other companies—to amplify our impact within our primary areas of focus.

Core to Business

These SDGs expand on our core areas of focus, impacting our industry and business directly. As a business, CA seeks to provide our employees and the communities where we operate with decent work and economic growth. The progression of industry, innovation and infrastructure leads to technological advances, which in turn allows the software and tech industries to create new employment opportunities. Reducing inequalities involves minimizing socioeconomic disparity; as the tech industry evolves around the world, we have a responsibility to serve and uplift the communities in which we operate.

Indirect Impact

While these SDGs are not directly related to our business and operations, we understand our indirect impact and the ways technology can help solve society’s most pressing problems.

Sustainability Materiality Assessment

In 2016, we conducted a materiality assessment, identifying the sustainability topics that are the most important to CA Technologies and to our stakeholders, to inform our sustainability strategy and lay the foundation of future reporting.

For the 2016 materiality refresh, we evolved our methodology while also using the topics universe identified in 2013 as the starting point of our analysis. We also completed a peer-review assessment of key suppliers, customers and influencers within the industry, which allowed us to track the changing priorities of our key areas of focus.

As part of our materiality assessment, we also conducted interviews with key internal stakeholders to assess the relative importance of sustainability issues across CA. The same participants completed a survey in which they ranked a subset of the topics universe based on their determination of each topic’s importance to CA Technologies. The interview process allowed participants to highlight topic areas that were not included in the survey shortlist. In addition to a growing emphasis on environmental topics, interviews with key internal stakeholders in 2016 revealed a strong interest in the sustainable future growth of CA Technologies as it proactively helps customers succeed in their digital transformation journey.

We continue to engage with all of our stakeholders—as well as with our industry as a whole—to update our strategy around materiality and ensure that our focus areas remain aligned with the most pressing issues.
