Employee Empowerment

In the not-too-distant future, up to 3 million jobs will be unfilled in the U.S. due to shortages of STEM skills. At the same time, unintended consequences of technological advances may lead to job displacement, disproportionately impacting older workers. Our challenge as a society will be to re-engage those marginalized workers while providing opportunities for young, digitally adept workers. Because job displacement has the potential to impact everyone, technology opportunities must be democratized.

At CA, we acknowledge that the technology sector has a responsibility to lead the way in responding to the shifting needs of the workforce. We believe we’re well qualified to take on this challenge because we, as an organization, are wired to be built for change. We have intentionally designed what we do and how we do it to be adaptable to continual change. We empower our employees by encouraging groundbreaking ideas and providing opportunities to pursue them—such as our unique CA Accelerator.

We also foster employee empowerment through a creative customer engagement program that helps typically non-customer-facing employees to check in with customers regarding their digital transformation journey, so these employees can better understand how all of us can help customers succeed.

THRIVE: Workforce Diversity and Inclusion

We believe that innovation and invention are by-products of an inclusive and diverse workplace. Diversity of perspective, experience and thought is key to driving creativity, innovation and results. We are committed to providing equitable opportunities and offering employees avenues for success—both personal and professional. We believe that workforce diversity is an important topic in the technology sector, and we are dedicated to moving the conversation on diversity forward.

That’s why part of our talent strategy is a program called THRIVE. At CA, we thrive by creating an inclusive work environment that values and leverages uniqueness, while motivating employees to unleash their full potential. Diversity and inclusion are true differentiators as we embed an inclusive mind-set in everything we do and encourage all employees to bring their unique skills and perspectives with them to work each day.

We take a multifaceted approach to removing bias interpersonally and systemwide by evaluating our programs and processes to ultimately achieve a more diverse workforce. This commitment was recently echoed at the 2018 Makers Conference, where CA pledged to conduct a policy and process audit across the company to assess possible areas of bias and implement solutions to remove bias.

By contributing to the industry benchmark and measuring their data against other participants’, they demonstrate a commitment to understanding where they are today, and how they can improve.
  • In 2017, we expanded our Unconscious Bias webcast to in-person workshops.
  • CA CEO Mike Gregoire signed the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™ pledge, saying, “CA Technologies is committed to driving continuous dialogue and taking action. As the leader of CA, I could not be more proud to sign the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion pledge, partnering with other corporate leaders to better engage and support all underrepresented groups within business.”

CA in Focus: Marc Chipouras

The concept of “intrapreneurship” can be defined as taking hands-on responsibility for creating innovation within a business. That’s an excellent way to define Marc Chipouras’ role at CA.

Marc came to CA when we acquired Rally Software Development Corp., a leading provider of Agile development software and services, in 2015. At Rally, Marc was Director of Data Engineering and Analysis, with a passion for data-driven decisions. Since then, he has cofounded a company called FreshTracks.io, which is focused on making software development more efficient.

FreshTracks.io operates under the CA Accelerator umbrella, functioning like a lean start-up, where internal innovators receive support and funding to get new products into market. The Accelerator is a safe sandbox for CA intraprenuers to vet their ideas by testing hypotheses about target problems, customers and solutions, and validating the market need for their innovations.

CA Accelerator projects often leverage fast-emerging technologies and techniques that help solve customer problems in new ways, such as artificial intelligence, neural networks and deep learning; advanced analytics, including predictive/prescriptive, real-time and data analytics; and bots, the Internet of Things (IoT), and serverless architecture.

Marc says the CA Accelerator is a great place to grow innovation. “We’re given a lot of freedom to go out there and find our audience, find the problems they’re having and actually build solutions for them.” He adds that the support CA Accelerator companies receive is invaluable. “We have access to product marketing, CA Distinguished Engineers and an ‘angel board’ to help us get our job done,” he says.

We developed the CA Accelerator because we know that start-ups fail when new businesses are treated and measured like mature businesses. The Accelerator’s consistent, proven innovation framework is designed to give new projects a greater chance at success—and get them into customers’ hands as fast as possible.

Employee Surveys

We conduct regular Pulse employee engagement surveys to measure employee engagement and other metrics such as work environment, team effectiveness and manager effectiveness.

Opportunities for strengthening include how employees are involved in decision-making and extending learning and growth opportunities. Compared with other high-tech companies, we lead in managers creating an environment of recognition, employees being involved in decisions, and employees feeling valued.

Our strengths in 2017 were in the areas of work
environment, having a culture of recognition,
motivation to contribute, and pride in working at CA.

CA Communities

CA Communities is an online forum where members collaborate daily on CA Technologies products. Customers, partners and CA employees can participate in these communities to get answers to product-related questions, submit product ideas, view product tips and tricks, and more. Fellow members help customers become experts on the products they use every day, and even help shape the future of CA products by submitting product enhancement requests and voting on the ideas of other community members. Members are located in more than 170 countries and participate in hundreds of thousands of conversations across more than 40 individual communities.

CSR Champions

Our CSR Champions are employee-led groups that volunteer their time to work on sustainability by managing local office-greening activities and encouraging more environmentally responsible behavior. CSR Champions leverage our employees’ energy and ideas, empowering them to advance our sustainability strategy. We continue to support local teams globally through corporate support of local initiatives. For example, in our Colorado offices we sponsor a bike-share pass program to encourage our employees to bike to work to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. We also engage with all employees through our annual CA Together in Action volunteer week.
